The Aqua Reaching Out Award was instituted in 2004 to recognize individuals who have made a difference in our community.  The first award was presented posthumously to J. Allen Pope, for his years of service to Mobile AIDS Support Services both as a volunteer and a member of the Board of Directors.  In Allen's honor the award was renamed the Aqua/J. Allen Pope Reaching Out Award.  The award has been  presented each November in conjunction with the Aqua Silent Auction.

The time has come to expand  the AQUA / J. Allen Pope Reaching Out Award.   We instituted the AQUA Community Unity Awards to be held in the spring of each year.   The J. Allen Pope award will be presented at this new event, the first of which was held March 8, 2007, at the L'Estrade Dinner Theater.   This year we added the AQUA Community Unity Award as well as having a guest speaker for the event.  We were fortunate to have  writer, actor, activist,  philanthropist and former marine, Jeff Key as our first guest speaker.

Ten Mobile organizations participated in this years event and a total of thirteen organizations were represented.  The reception this event received by the capacity crowd and the community in general was greater than any of us dreamed.  There is no question the AQUA Community Unity will grow to become a major event in Mobile.
